About Us

Wynberg Cricket Club is one of the oldest clubs in the Western Province Cricket Association, with a history that stems back to the early 1930’s.

Wynberg Cricket Club

It is not exactly known when cricket started at the Wynberg Club, but cricket was played in the early 1930’s. There is documentation proving that the Wynberg Cricket Club opened a banking account with Standard Bank on 19 September 1932. The late Doug McCreadie built the present clubhouse in the late 1970’s. Doug McCreadie decided to build the clubhouse because of the problems that were caused by apartheid. Visiting coloured teams were not allowed in the main clubhouse, because it was reserved for whites only. The cricket clubhouse was first shared with the ladies soccer section and then with the men’s soccer section. A few months before Doug McCreadie passed away on 5 July 1998, he celebrated his 60th Anniversary as a member of the Wynberg Sports Club. The Clubhouse has been officially named Mac’s hut.
The Wynberg Cricket Club had three teams in 1979 and eventually after a long struggle to attract players to the club they ended up with only one team in 1988. It was decided in this season that the 1987/88 season would be the last season for the Wynberg Cricket Club.

valkenberg Cricket Club

The Valkenberg Cricket Club was established in 1972 and started with a team in the third division, using the Valkenberg hospital grounds. The first clubhouse was an old toilet with only candlelight. Later an old patient’s ward was used as the clubhouse. The Valkenberg Cricket Club’s first team won promotions until they reached the second division in the 1980’s. The field at the Valkenberg hospital was not up to standard as the club reached the higher divisions and the Pinelands Sports Complex fields were later used for matches. New grounds were needed as the hospital grounds were being sold.

merger between Clubs

The Wynberg/Valkenberg Cricket Club was established in 1989. The reason for the merger was because of the Wynberg Club having no players and the Valkenberg Club needing new grounds. The Wynberg/Valkenberg Cricket Club started in the 1989/90 cricket season with three teams. The first team started in the 2D league, which they won and gained promotion. In the next four seasons with the transformation of the leagues, the first team found themselves in the 2A league. In 1997 Valkenberg celebrated their 25th Anniversary of the Club. After seven seasons at Wynberg Sports Club and with no more ties with the Valkenberg Hospital it was decided at the 1997 AGM that the Valkenberg name would be dropped and the name of the club would be changed back to the Wynberg Cricket Club. In this year the Club also added a 4th team.
In the first season with the new name the first team won the 2A league for the first time and gained promotion to the first division. With the 2nd team winning the one-day final for the third consecutive season and the 4th winning their league – the Wynberg Cricket Club won the MTN CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD voted by the Western Province Cricket Association.
